Wisconsin Auctioneer
License Requirements

To become a licensed auctioneer in Wisconsin, you must apply through the state's LicensE online portal, pass the auctioneer examination and pay the required fees.

Requirements Checklist

  • Must apply online through Wisconsin's LicensE system (license.wi.gov)
  • Must pass the auctioneer exam.
  • Must pay the credential fee. (Wisconsin calls this license a registration.)

Step by Step Process

  1. Create an account and apply through Wisconsin's LicensE online portal.
  2. Pass the exam.
  3. Pay the credential fee to complete your registration.

Timeline and Cost

Typical fees to get registered
ItemAmount
Exam and License fee$173 ($126 exam fee plus $47 license fee)
Temporary permit fee$10
License Renewal (every 2 years)$47

Fees are set by DSPS and are subject to change.

Temporary Permit

Applicants who apply to register by examination can request a temporary registration certificate for an additional $10 fee. This temporary credential is valid for no more than 60 days from the date you filed your registration application, during which time you must take the examination. This gives you a window to begin working while your full registration is being finalized, rather than waiting entirely on the sidelines. The temporary permit cannot be renewed or extended, and the fee is nonrefundable.

Renewal and Continuing Education

Licenses are renewed every two years. Wisconsin requires 12 hours of continuing education for renewal.

Auction Companies

An auction company is not required to have its officers, partners, or directors individually registered as auctioneers, unless those individuals personally engage in the specific acts that define practicing as an auctioneer under Wisconsin law.

Reciprocity

Wisconsin has reciprocal agreements with Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, and Texas.
