How Auctioneering Works in Iowa (No State License Required)
Iowa does not require a state issued license to work as an auctioneer. You can conduct personal property auctions in Iowa without a state exam or license.
What's Actually Required
- No general state auctioneer license is required for personal property auctions in Iowa.
- Local ordinances can be detailed even without a state license. As one example, the City of Bettendorf's municipal code includes a dedicated chapter on "Auctions and Auctioneers" covering auctioneer license fees and bonding, separate auction permits and fees, and restrictions on sales.
- Iowa sales tax still applies. Contact the Iowa Department of Revenue directly for auctioneer specific sales tax collection guidance.
A Licensing System Iowa Has Considered, But Not Adopted
Iowa's legislature has repeatedly considered creating a statewide auctioneer licensing system without passing one into law. House File 2399 (77th General Assembly), House File 71 (78th General Assembly), and House File 134 (79th General Assembly) all proposed a new Iowa Code Chapter 545A that would have governed auctioneer licensing statewide. None of these bills became law, so the current landscape of local ordinances and category specific rules remains in place.
Why Education Still Matters Even Without a Licensing Exam
Iowa doesn't require a state exam, but the fundamentals, meaning the chant, contract and consignment handling, ethics, trust account management, and running a profitable auction business, are what buyers and sellers actually evaluate you on. Training also matters since municipal licensing in certain cities is common enough to plan around rather than discover late.
