Vermont Auctioneer
License Requirements

To become a licensed auctioneer in Vermont, you must qualify by either completing auction school or a supervised apprenticeship, and submit a complete application with the required fee. There is no state auction exam.

Two Ways to Qualify

  • Auction school path:complete auction school, such as Missouri Auction School's Vermont course.
  • Apprenticeship path:complete at least 250 hours of experience within a single calendar year, including active participation in at least 6 auctions, including bid calling, under the direction and supervision of an auctioneer who is licensed and in good standing either in Vermont or in another state, and who has been in practice for at least 3 years. Proof can be submitted as a sworn affidavit from the supervising auctioneer.

Requirements Checklist

  • Complete one of the two qualifying paths above.
  • Submit a written application to the Director of the Office of Professional Regulation, with the required fee.
  • No examination required.
  • No continuing education required for renewal.

Step by Step Process

  1. Choose your qualifying path, either auction school or a one year, 250 hour, 6 auction apprenticeship under a licensed auctioneer with at least 3 years of practice.
  2. If pursuing the apprenticeship path, contact OPR first for the appropriate forms before beginning. This is not something you can retroactively document after the fact.
  3. Submit your online application through Vermont's Online Services System, along with your Verification of Education or Verification of Apprenticeship Experience form, and the application fee.
  4. Receive your license. Processing typically takes 3 to 5 business days once your application is complete.

License Renewal

Vermont auctioneer licenses run on a fixed two year cycle, expiring September 30 of every even numbered year. OPR sends renewal reminders by mail roughly 6 weeks before expiration. No continuing education is required.

Reciprocity

Vermont does not maintain a specific list of predetermined, state by state reciprocal agreements for auctioneers. Vermont allows any applicant who is already licensed as an auctioneer in another state to qualify if they meet the state's requirements.
